Falmouth Week – boats, Brad Pitt and zombies

From 6 – 14 August, world class regatta racing, nine days of live music, events and excitement descend upon the cosmopolitan hub of Falmouth. At the same time, Paramount Pictures will be shooting World War Z, a Hollywood blockbuster with Brad Pitt. The scenes will be shot aboard a boat in Falmouth harbour from August 2 – 12, so watch out for one of the world’s biggest heart throbs in the world’s third largest natural harbour. 500 locals are taking part in the production as extras.

Home to Cornwall’s only university, the town of Falmouth is a refreshing blend and buzz of creativity, hip bars, cafes, restaurants and shops, situated just at the top of the secluded and stunning Roseland Peninsula. The much -anticipated annual Falmouth Week kicks off with a regatta and racing from 12pm on Saturday 6 August, filling the harbour with sails and colour. It finishes with an opening party in the evening at Events Square, featuring live music from Giles Robson and the Dirty Aces as heard on BBC Radio 2. Sunday sees those hilariously entertaining West County Wurzels getting on down with a keen crowd and a hog roast at 7 and Jimmy Tarbuck getting some laughs at the Pavilion.

As some top-notch sailing and racing continues throughout the week, other highlights include An Evening With Rick Stein on Tuesday, when Rick will cook from his new book and chat about his TV series in Spain. The Fishermans’ Friends are set to woo and seduce a crowd of admirers on Thursday with their unique blend of Cornish humour and sea shanties; choose from a Fireworks Spectacular or an outdoor screening of Robin Hood at Pendennis Castle for an atmospheric end to the week on Friday.

A fantastic week of sails, sea and talent, fun and frolics wraps up with a global themed bang at the weekend: Caribbean Party Night on Saturday night and a live reggae night on Sunday with the Backbeat sound system or the more sedate Cornish Silver Bands in the afternoon. What with the chances of catching Brad Pitt and the zombies in amongst all the entertainment, it would be churlish not to go.
