What a choice! It’s wonderful to see a gradual hum of budding wine aficionados exploring new styles and experiencing for themselves the wow-factor when the right food and wine marry, a worthwhile crusade to perfectly match your authentic sausage casserole with the perfect Rhone offering perhaps or finding just the right balance of fruit and acidity to complement your homemade Asparagus Tart.
A risk of opening the proverbial Pandora’s box and getting bogged down in the greatest of vintages, terroir and methodology, it’s an idea to simply focus on a variety of good honest wines. We’ve come a long way from house or everyday wines historically a little too ‘rustic’, limited choice and certainly price driven over quality; thankfully no more, now we are seeing some wonderful entry point wines immediately appealing and sensibly priced, happy days! I’m delighted to see a growing momentum in BYO set up’s and clandestine pop-up restaurants, not aimed at those looking for a cheap night out but moreover creating an opportunity for those passionate about wine to get together over a few different styles without paying the premium of mark-ups (a rant for another day!).
To my mind some of the rising stars include the super-foodie whites Godello and Albarino, not such new kids on the block but have become more en vogue with the increase in artisan style cooking; Picpoul de Pinet offers up fresh rounded and floral nuances making it an obvious choice for seafood. If you’re a foodie nut and enjoy a culinary journey, make sure you detour en route and pick up a few different bottles to complement the occasion, there’s a whole world of Bacchus temptation to discover!
