The Great Indoors: Half Term

Family days out don’t get much better than discovering the world of smuggling, checking out creepy crawlies, tearing around a magnificent playpark or having a go on an automata … and you can do all of these brilliant family things here in Cornwall. Here is a run-down of what’s waiting to be explored this February half term in some of Cornwall’s museums …

Penlee House Gallery & Museum

The magic of Penlee House is seeing world-class art in a completely relevant local context, often a stone’s throw from where they were created …  the gallery is set in magnificent grounds perfect for walking or running around and there’s a fantastic playpark suitable for children of all ages, meaning there’s something for all ages in one visit … and its free admission on Saturdays.

Free family activities take place every Saturday at the Gallery; drop in any time between 2.30pm and 3.30pm to have a go at making your own piece of art inspired by the artworks in the current exhibition.

Children’s art workshops – printmaking with Catherine Haines – on Thursday 20 February, 10.00am – 12.00pm, £4.50 per child (age 7-13 recommended), booking essential. Please call 01736 363625 for more information.

National Maritime Museum Cornwall

Silver winner of  Best UK Heritage Attraction at the British Travel Awards and recently shortlisted for the Kids in Museums Daily Telegraph Family Friendly Museum Award, the National Maritime Museum Cornwall celebrates the sea, boats and Cornwall with 15 stunning galleries across five floors with exhibitions large and small.

Douglas Dapper’s Fishy Tales

Discover what the Story Explorer has caught in his nets, as he trawls the Museum for more inspiring artefacts, in a brand new adventure.

All activities FREE with Museum entrance ticket. One creative craft activity each day.

Smuggling exhibition, 3 Feb – 6 July : Immerse yourself in the world of smuggling during its heyday in the mid-18th to early 19th century in a new exhibition at National Maritime Museum Cornwall. View rare and exquisite smuggling artefacts in this sensory exhibition for all ages.

Open daily 10am-5pm, seven days a week. Closed Christmas Day & Boxing Day.

Royal Cornwall Museum

There’s lots for families to enjoy together in the Royal Cornwall museum, get up close to the plants, fungi and animals in the Natural History Gallery,  learn about different birdsong in the discovery area and see artefacts from Greek, Roman and Egyptian civilisations.

Falmouth Art Gallery

This award winning gallery is loved by locals of all ages. The gallery has gained a national reputation for providing innovative family & community workshops winning (amongst others) The Guardian Kids in Museums Award.

The gallery runs free drop-in family workshops on Saturdays from 2 pm – 3 pm.  For half term you can make your own fishing boat out of scrap materials and then together with everyone make a stop motion film about life at sea on 15th Feb and on 22nd Feb there’s the chance to use brilliant colour contrasts to draw dramatic clouds.

Open Mondays to Saturday, 10am to 5pm. Free entry.
