Found right in the midst of Mount Hawke, OSBK is a beautiful nineteenth century school building with stacks of space, cosy old furniture and friendly faces. Blending the old with the contemporary, mismatched extendable tables are dotted about the cosily lit, L-shaped dining room, with daffodils on every table, and a traditional menu using fresh, local ingredients. Before taking our seats in the restaurant, Boyfriend and I popped through to the bar, which was pleasantly busy and bustling for a school night. We had a quick snoop in the snug, admiring the vintage armchairs and made a note to return to them later to collapse in a heap with full bellies.

From the specials blackboard we chose the salt and pepper squid to start, and it was salty, so be sure to have a cool glass of something delicious on hand for optimum enjoyment if it’s available on your visit. It arrived on black slate with dressed leaves and a delectable smear of paprika aioli. We followed this up with a couple of juicy burgers and it was all I could do to restrain myself from piling mine high with every choice of topping on the “Design-your-own Burger” menu, the easiest multiple choice test ever taken. Dessert was a lemon and lime posset, begrudgingly shared. Enormous and delightfully citrusy, it was devoured almost instantaneously. Next time, I shall have two to myself. Before my starter.

The playground of picnic benches outside will lend itself perfectly to alfresco feasting with a pint this summer, with the leather armchairs of the snug inviting you back inside when the chill sets in at sundown. The variety of inviting areas and warm, friendly staff make this gem equally as appealing for a quiet coffee as a boozy birthday dinner. Using the space so well, Old School Bar and Kitchen could teach other eateries a thing or two about laid back Cornish hospitality.
