The Grumpies: A very festive stuffing

Two new kids on the block in the delicious shape of Trevor Shea and Mark Carne, founders of Grumpies of Cornwall, may play on their cantankerous old men status but GCG can report with all honesty there’s a lot more rumpy than grumpy with this pair.

M&S started it with ‘those’ ads; Nigella took it to another level. Delia may have done wonders for the sale of cranberries at Christmas but she’s never going to set pulses racing braising cabbage in a twin-set. Jamie doesn’t. Ramsay and Marco Pierre-White most certainly do. There is no glitterati elitism when it comes to food porn. There are the’ haves’ and the ‘have nots’. Greg Wallace gives great food sex. John Torode falls short. The Grumpies do it in pastry.

GCG HQ was a stop-off during The Grumpies one day whistle-stop tour of Cornwall to promote their two gourmet festive pies. The GCG girls had the chance to devour ‘Christmas in a Pie’ (handmade turkey cranberry and stuffing and a delectable vegetarian alternative of roasted squash, stilton and chestnut). Its poor form to talk with your mouthful, so in between bites we spoke to the boys about the success of Grumpies first year and what’s in store for 2012.

Business partners of 13 years, Trevor and Mark clock-up around thirty years in the food industry between them. Notably in patisserie (which explains the exemplary pie pastry). Simply serious about food, the pair source as much they can from Cornwall using only the best local ingredients and Cornish ales to boot. As far from a pasty as possible, these little pies are ‘proper’ gourmet in a compostable box. No additives, no preservatives and no MSG; seasoning to taste. The pies are made with ‘clean deck stock’ (which has been approved for use in school meals) so with a very low salt content; these pies really can be a meal solution for grown-ups and the not so grown-ups.

Plans for the New Year include a limited edition Valentine’s Grumpie as well as branching into their Old Tart line (fruity and fabulous …)

The full Grumpies range can be bought online and will arrive anywhere in the UK within 24hrs. Meet the delectable Grumpies on tour at Falmouth Christmas Market December 15 – 18.
